A mystery on the cardiac ward
An epic tale of true crime, with a personal connection to my own heart history
About a year ago, I sat down with my mom to interview her about my heart history. Barely five minutes into the conversation, she stopped me. Then she told me about a series of mysterious deaths on the cardiac ward at Canada’s top children’s hospital, the very place that I would be transferred shortly after my birth a few years after the tragedy occurred.
What happened? I’ve spent the past few months delving into that mystery, interviewing people involved, and exploring how the events shaped my own trajectory. The resulting story, published by Narratively, is out now.
This is quite possibly the most in-depth, shocking and (in a strange way) life-affirming piece of writing I’ve ever done. I’d love for you to read it, share it, heart it, leave a comment, do all the things!
Note that this story deals with the deaths of babies with heart conditions—take care when reading. Also, you can listen to the story by opening it in the Substack app and tapping the ▶️ button in the upper righthand corner. Without further ado… here it is!
Dozens of Infants Died Mysteriously at a Top Children’s Hospital—I Wanted to Know Why
Years after the suspicious deaths occurred at the very hospital where I spent time as a baby, I decided to investigate what happened. Had this been a mass murder or a tragic coincidence?
